Should you buy the materials yourself?
When supplying your own fixtures saves money, and when it backfires.
Contractors mark up materials to cover ordering, delivery, returns and the risk of a part being wrong. Buying your own can save money on finishes you choose, but it shifts that risk to you.
Often worth it
- Finish items you've chosen carefully: faucets, light fixtures, tile, cabinet hardware
- Appliances, when you can catch a sale and arrange delivery yourself
Usually better left to the contractor
- Rough materials like pipe, wire and lumber, where the right spec matters
- Anything with a warranty that depends on professional installation
- Roofing and HVAC equipment, which contractors often buy at trade prices
Agree first
Ask before you buy. Some contractors won't warranty the installation of materials they didn't supply, or charge more to install them. Get the exact model numbers they need, and agree in writing who handles returns if something arrives damaged.
