Repair or replace?

A quick check using the 50 percent rule: if a repair costs more than half the price of replacing, and the item is past half its expected life, replacing is usually the better use of your money.

Before you decide

  • Safety first. A leaking water heater tank, a cracked furnace heat exchanger or anything involving a gas leak means replace or call a pro now, whatever the math says.
  • Running costs. A much more efficient replacement can lower monthly bills, which shifts the math toward replacing.
  • Get two quotes for each option. Replacement quotes vary even more than repair quotes.
  • Your plans. If you're selling soon, a solid repair often makes more sense.
