Where to find help paying for home repairs

Legitimate programs that help homeowners with urgent repairs, weatherization and energy bills. Most are run locally, so availability depends on where you live, your income and sometimes your age.

Start here

  • Dial 211

Free, confidential referral line run by United Way partners. Ask which home repair, weatherization and energy bill programs serve your address.

  • Your city or county housing department

Many cities and counties run owner-occupied repair or rehab programs, often funded by federal block grants. Search your city or county name plus "home repair program", and make sure the site ends in .gov.

  • HUD-approved housing counselors

Free or low-cost advice on paying for repairs, avoiding risky loans and dealing with lenders. Search by ZIP code.

Federal programs (applied for locally)

  • USDA Section 504 Home Repair loans and grants

For very-low-income homeowners in eligible rural areas. Low-interest loans for repairs and improvements; grants for homeowners 62 and older to remove health and safety hazards. Check current limits on the USDA site.

  • Weatherization Assistance Program

Free insulation, air sealing and some heating system repairs for income-eligible households, run through state and local agencies.

  • LIHEAP energy assistance

Helps with heating and cooling bills. In some states it also covers emergency furnace or AC repair. Funding and rules vary by state and year.

  • VA disability housing grants

Grants for eligible veterans and service members with certain service-connected disabilities to adapt a home.

Older adults and accessibility

  • Eldercare Locator

Connects you with your local Area Agency on Aging, which can point to repair, accessibility and home safety programs. Phone 1-800-677-1116.

Nonprofits and volunteers

  • Rebuilding Together

Local affiliates and volunteers repair homes for homeowners in need. Eligibility and costs are set locally.

  • Habitat for Humanity

Many local Habitat affiliates run repair programs for older adults and low-income homeowners, alongside their homebuilding work. Contact your local affiliate.
