How to check a contractor's license and insurance

A ten-minute check that protects you from unlicensed work and injury claims.

5 min read

Licensing rules differ by state and trade. Some states license general contractors, others only plumbers and electricians, and some leave it to cities. A few minutes of checking is worth it on any job over a few hundred dollars.

License

  1. Search your state contractor licensing board, or your city or county licensing office, by the business name and license number on the quote.
  2. Check that the license is active, for the right trade, and in the same business name.
  3. Look for complaints or disciplinary actions.

Insurance

  1. Ask for a certificate of insurance showing general liability, and workers' compensation if they have employees.
  2. Call the insurer listed on the certificate to confirm it's current.
  3. For bigger jobs, ask to be named as a certificate holder so you're told if the policy lapses.

Why it matters

If an uninsured worker is hurt on your property, or an uninsured contractor damages your home, you can end up paying. Unlicensed work can also cause problems with permits, insurance claims and selling your home.
